Home additions & new homes in Palo Alto.

More room for family. A better connection to the garden. Or a home planned from the ground up. Sami & Sons works with Palo Alto homeowners on additions, new construction and substantial changes to the way a home is lived in.

Planning your project

Start with the review path.

An extra level and a ground-floor extension can lead to different design and review questions. Before committing to a layout, bring the property and the proposed work into the same conversation.

A second story needs an early planning conversation.

Palo Alto’s current guidance distinguishes projects that meet its two-story objective design standards from those requiring Individual Review. For a new two-story home or a qualifying second-floor addition, ask your design team which path fits the proposal before setting a construction start date.

Read the city guidance

Look beyond the floor plan.

The City’s single-family checklist calls for information about the parcel, zoning, existing and proposed development, and the site itself. Gather your survey, existing drawings and any prior city comments so the discussion starts with the actual property.

Keep the parts you value in view.

Tell us which rooms, outlooks and outdoor spaces you want to preserve. For an addition, we can discuss the connection to the existing house; for a new home, the relationship between the site, the design and everyday use. These priorities help frame a useful scope conversation.

Before we talk.

Can we talk before the plans are finished?

Yes. Tell us whether you are exploring an addition, comparing it with a new home, or already working with a design team. We can start the conversation with the information you have; a reliable scope still needs the property and plans to be understood.

Does every two-story project follow the same review process?

No. The City describes an objective-standards path and an Individual Review path. Your design team should confirm the applicable process for the specific proposal using the current city guidance linked below.

Can you work with our architect?

Yes. Bring your architect or designer into the discussion. We can review the intended scope, outstanding decisions and the coordination the project will need.

City guidance checked September 18, 2026. The applicable requirements depend on your property and proposal; confirm them with the City and your design team.
