Consider the house and its setting.
A successful brief explains both the space you need and how the home should relate to its surroundings. In Los Altos, design review belongs near the start of that conversation.
Make design review part of the plan.
Los Altos identifies exterior alterations, additions and new construction in its R1 district as subject to design review. Its residential guidelines and neighborhood compatibility worksheet are useful starting references for your architect or designer.
Read the city guidanceUnderstand what another level changes.
The City lists new two-story houses and second-story additions among projects reviewed by the Zoning Administrator. Confirm the route for your design before assuming that a larger addition can follow the same sequence as a smaller alteration.

Bring your priorities for daylight, privacy, outdoor access and the rooms you use most. In an addition, the meeting point between old and new deserves as much attention as the extra space. For a replacement home, start with what you want the new layout to make possible.

Bring what you have.
We’ll start there.
You do not need every answer to get in touch. These details help us understand the work you are considering.

- Existing floor plans and photographs of the areas you want to change
- A survey or site plan, if available, including the outdoor areas you value
- Your design team’s drawings and any design-review correspondence
- Priorities for privacy, daylight, access and living arrangements during the work
Before we talk.
Should we discuss design review before estimating?
Bring any city feedback into the estimate conversation. The proposed design and its review requirements affect the scope being discussed. If you have not started that process, tell us where you are so the next steps can be coordinated.
Are Los Altos and Los Altos Hills the same permit jurisdiction?
No. They are separate cities. This guide covers the City of Los Altos. Share the property location so the correct jurisdiction and requirements can be checked.
Can we compare an addition with a whole-house remodel?
Yes. Explain what is not working in the current home and which parts you want to retain. We can discuss those options as different scopes rather than assume that adding floor area is the only answer.
