Tile Installation & Replacement in Palo Alto & the Bay Area
Sami & Sons provides professional tile installation and replacement for homeowners across Palo Alto, San Jose, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, and the greater Bay Area. We install tile in showers, bathroom floors, kitchen floors, backsplashes, entryways, laundry rooms, and feature walls — handling all substrate preparation, waterproofing, setting, grouting, and finish work in-house. Our licensed team brings precision and craftsmanship to every tile project, from a simple backsplash replacement to a complete custom shower build.
We are a family-owned contractor with 15+ years of Bay Area experience. Tile work done poorly fails quickly — cracked tiles, failed grout, water intrusion behind shower walls. We do it right: correct substrate, correct waterproofing, correct mortar selection, and meticulous installation technique that produces work that looks exceptional and lasts for decades.
Shower Tile Installation & Replacement
Shower tile installation is the most technically demanding tile application — and the one where failures are most costly. Water intrusion behind a shower wall causes mold, structural damage, and eventually requires a complete teardown and rebuild. We use certified waterproofing membranes (Schluter Kerdi, WEDI, or equivalent) on every shower we tile, properly lapped and bonded at all seams and corners before a single tile goes up. This is not optional and it is not something we skip to save time or money.
We install all tile types in shower applications: large-format porcelain (24x48, 12x24, and similar), natural marble and travertine, glass mosaic, and mixed-material designs that combine multiple tile types in a single installation. We plan layouts carefully — centering on focal walls, planning grout joints for visual consistency, and managing transitions between different tile types or formats with precision and intention.
Floor Tile Installation
Floor tile installations require a flat, stiff substrate to prevent cracking over time — particularly with larger format tiles, which are unforgiving of subfloor deflection. We assess subfloor flatness and stiffness before any floor tile installation, performing necessary leveling or substrate reinforcement before setting tile. We install uncoupling membrane (Schluter DITRA or equivalent) on wood subfloor installations to isolate the tile from subfloor movement — a critical step that dramatically extends floor tile life in wood-frame Bay Area homes.
We install all floor tile types: large-format porcelain, natural stone, encaustic cement tile, and mosaic. Pattern installations — herringbone, chevron, basket weave, offset patterns — are planned and laid out carefully before installation begins to ensure consistent pattern execution across the full floor area.

Kitchen Backsplash Tile Installation
A kitchen backsplash is one of the highest visual-impact upgrades in a home — and one of the more approachable tile installations in terms of scope. We install subway tile, zellige, handmade ceramic, glass tile, natural stone, and large-format slab-look porcelain backsplashes — handling all demo of existing backsplash material, substrate preparation, setting, grouting, and caulking at all transitions and inside corners.
Full-height backsplash installations — tiling from countertop to underside of upper cabinet across the entire kitchen — are increasingly popular in Bay Area kitchen remodels and add significant visual impact. We plan layout to center on the range or focal point of the kitchen wall, manage electrical outlet cutouts with precision, and finish with appropriate caulk joints at all countertop and cabinet transitions to accommodate movement without cracking.
Tile Repair & Replacement
Cracked, loose, or failing tile is a common issue in older Bay Area homes — and one that gets worse if left unaddressed. A cracked floor tile allows moisture infiltration into the substrate. A loose shower tile signals that the waterproofing behind it may already be compromised. We assess tile failures to understand the root cause — substrate failure, movement, improper installation — and repair correctly rather than just patching over a symptom.
For partial tile replacements, we source matching tile or the closest available match, remove damaged tiles without disturbing adjacent work, address any substrate issues found during removal, and reinstall with matched grout color. For larger-scale tile replacement projects — a full bathroom floor retile, a shower rebuild — we manage the complete scope from demo through finished installation, including all waterproofing, permits where required, and final grouting and sealing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Tile installation in the Bay Area typically runs $12–$22 per square foot for standard ceramic or porcelain floor tile (labor and materials), $18–$35 per square foot for natural stone, and $20–$45 per square foot for shower tile with proper waterproofing. Backsplash installations typically run $800–$2,500 depending on size and material. We provide detailed, itemized estimates before any work begins.
For shower walls, large-format porcelain (12x24 or larger) is an excellent choice — fewer grout joints mean less maintenance and a cleaner look. For shower floors, smaller tiles (mosaic or 4x4) provide the grout joint density needed for proper slope and slip resistance. Natural stone is beautiful but requires sealing and more maintenance. We help you select the right tile for your specific shower configuration and lifestyle.
A kitchen backsplash typically takes 1–2 days. A bathroom floor retile takes 2–3 days. A complete shower tile installation with waterproofing takes 4–7 days including waterproofing cure time. A full bathroom tile package (floor, shower, and backsplash) typically takes 7–12 days. We provide a specific timeline during your free consultation.
Most standalone tile installations (backsplash, floor retile) do not require permits. Shower tile work that involves modifying or replacing the waterproofing system may require a plumbing permit in some Bay Area cities. Work that involves any electrical modifications always requires a permit. We determine permit requirements for your specific project during the estimate process.
If tile is cracked but the surrounding tiles are solid and the substrate is sound, repair or replacement of the cracked tile is often sufficient. If multiple tiles are loose, if you can hear a hollow sound when tapping tiles across a wide area, or if grout is consistently failing, these are signs of substrate or waterproofing failure that require a more comprehensive repair. We assess shower tile condition during free in-home consultations and give you an honest recommendation.
