Planning & building

Choose countertops in the context of the room

Start with use, then review an actual product and installation proposal. A material name alone does not tell you how a finished surface should be designed or cared for.

Architectural material study with timber, stone and finish samples.
Put material choices beside the scope and allowances they affect.

Describe how you will use the surface.

Discuss cooking, cleaning, entertaining and the level of maintenance you are willing to take on. Bring those priorities to the showroom rather than choosing only from a small photograph. Ask for the selected product’s current care instructions and warranty before committing.

Quartz, granite and porcelain each include different products and finishes. Do not transfer a heat, stain or scratch claim from one sample to an entire category. Follow the guidance for the exact product you choose.

Review the sample in your room.

Architectural drawings, a house model, pencils and material samples arranged for a planning discussion.
Bring the drawings, priorities and questions into one conversation.

Compare it with the cabinetry, flooring and wall materials under the light you expect in the finished space. Ask how the pattern will be arranged across seams, corners and larger surfaces. Record the agreed finish and edge detail rather than relying on a category name.

Make the installation scope explicit.

Ask the fabricator and design team about cutouts, seams, edge construction, support and any special detailing in the proposal. Confirm sink and appliance information before final dimensions are taken. Requirements belong to the selected product and design.

Compare quotes for the same scope: material, fabrication, delivery, installation, cutouts and any removal or associated work. A lower material price does not tell you the complete installed cost.

Keep a clear selection record.

  • Exact manufacturer, product, finish and sample approval
  • Layout, seams, edge detail and cutouts
  • Included work and responsibilities
  • Care instructions and written warranty information
